Building Background Knowledge: Belle Prater's Boy

Grade: 6

Introduction: You will soon be reading the novel, Belle Prater’s Boy, by Ruth White. This novel is set in the Appalachian region of the United States in the 1950’s. Your teacher wants you to learn about the region and the time period before you read this book so that you will understand and enjoy the book as much as possible. We can’t time travel and we can’t take a field trip to the mountains, but we can do some research.
You will be working in groups to discover Belle Prater’s world. Group topics will include:

Appalachia - Geographical features, economy, history, plant/animal life

1950's technology, inventions, medicine

1950's American Popular Culture - fashion, music, movies, fads

America and World Politics in the 1950's

Coal Mining in the Eastern United States

Your group will need to find and use at least four sources of information with one being a print source. You and your group members will need to work together to find the information and then create a poster for presentation to your class and teacher. The poster must include at least four illustrations with captions and your group must be ready to elaborate on the information presented by the poster. All group members will be expected to share information during the presentation.
You will need to cite your sources of information in MLA format. You may consult the link listed below or use the handout provided by your teacher. If you have any questions about this, check with Ms Pearson or your teacher for help.

Citation Help

Possible Search Terms/Keywords:

Appalachia/Appalachian Mountains

Virginia

West Virginia

Coal Mining

1950

Music

Technology

Medicine

Cold War

Fashion

Entertainment

Politics

Dewey Numbers: 004, 031.02, 92, 303.4, 304.2, 306, 324.6, 333.79, 341.23, 384.3, 391, 398.2, 503, 509.4, 608, 609, 610, 620, 621.3, 781.6, 781.7, 791.4, 792, 903, 909.8, 920, 973.9, 974, 975

RMS Library Print Resources:

Association, Readers D. Reader's Digest Book of Facts.
